West Kirby marine lake has re-opened following a scare over high bacteria levels, Wirral council announced this afternoon.

The lake has been closed since Tuesday, when one of the organisations using the lake raised concerns about a potentially high level of bacteria in the water. All scheduled events on the lake were cancelled, and the public were warned not to go into the water.

On Wednesday the council said the lake would be closed until at least after the weekend as the environmental health team waited for the results of tests on the water taken that morning.

But today the council said that the marine lake had been given the all-clear after water quality testing confirmed that it was safe, and declared the lake open again with immediate effect.

“Preliminary results from three samples taken earlier this week by the council’s environmental health team show that the marine lake easily passes the mandatory bathing water quality standard,” a council spokesman said.

“It is likely that in two of the locations tested, the water quality will actually meet the higher standard – Blue Flag quality bathing water. We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by customers this week as we investigated concerns.”

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary, precautionary closure and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.”
