A local headteacher has paid tribute to a former pupil who was waking up this morning as the husband of the country’s new Prime Minister.

Philip May spent yesterday being photographed outside No.10 Downing Street as his wife, Teresa May, was officially made the leader of the country.

But did you know that Mr May, who is an investment banker, grew up in Heswall and was a pupil at Calday Grange Grammar School, in Caldy?

Staff at Calday Grange have expressed their pride at having the new Prime Minister’s husband as a former pupil – the latest member of the school’s famous alumni.

Mark Rodaway, headteacher of Calday Grange Grammar School, said: “The school has a large number of famous alumni including Victoria Cross winner, Cyril Gourley, Sir Herbert Emerson, Governor of the Punjab, Steve Cummings, a stage winner in this year’s Tour de France,  members of the 80’s pop group OMD and more recently, Clean Bandit.

“We have always known that Mr May attended the school but it has become more noteworthy due to his wife becoming Prime Minister.

“The school works hard to prepare our students for their future careers and I am sure that Mr May benefited from an outstanding education before embarking on his History course at Oxford.”

After Calday Grange, Philip went on to Lincoln College, in Oxford, where he read Modern History, and also met his wife, who was a fellow student.

Despite being involved at politics at university, he embarked on a career in Investment Banking and is currently a relationship manager for Capital Group, a private firm based in Belgravia.
