Hoylake’s oldest pub has reopened following a makeover – and helped raise money to fund an injured local man’s dream of getting back into professional sport.

The Green Lodge – which has stood for well over 200 years and was originally built as a hunting lodge in the 18th century – was shut for the best part of a month while the work was carried out.

The Marston’s pub decided to welcome back its locals early with a unique ‘Pay What You Feel’ event, which raised £1,640 to help former professional free runner Mat Armitage.

Mat was involved in a horrific motorbike accident earlier this year which left him with life changing injuries. After having his lower right leg amputated, Mat still hopes of one day getting back into sport but needs new prosthetics to fulfil his dream.

The pub took the opportunity to help the cause by tying in the charity event with the reopening of the pub on the same weekend.

Mat said: “It was a brilliant night in a lovely pub and restaurant that supports local causes in its close-knit community.”

Pub manager Danny Sargent said: “The pub looks great! We could not be happier with the results and hope all our locals enjoy it too.

“The pub was a great place to host the event, we received so much support from the local community and we want to thank everyone who came down and donated to Mat’s cause.”
