Merseytravel have apologised to residents for the noise from work to upgrade the platform at West Kirby station.

Local residents living around the station have taken to social media to complain about drilling by contractors who are preparing the platform for the new Merseyrail fleet which is due to come into service next year.

Work has been starting as early as 5am and continuing until around midnight.

Iona Horsburgh posted on Merseyrail’s Facebook page: “I live on Grange Road and just need a night’s sleep – the digging all night equals no sleep for residents. Obviously no-one who works for Merseyrail lives by these works!!”

The new trains being introduced next year will have step-free access, which means alterations are needed to platforms

A Merseytravel spokesman told West Kirby Today: “Until Sunday 29 September works are being undertaken at West Kirby station to prepare the network for our new trains which will provide level access for users.

“The type of equipment and machinery used does mean some disturbance is unavoidable, but every effort will be made to minimise unnecessary noise.

“In advance of these platform upgrades we did contact lineside neighbours to inform them of the work, but we do understand the inconvenience and disruption which can be caused.

“If you would like to make a complaint or raise an issue during the works, please contact Network Rail via the 24hr customer call centre – 03457 114141. Please highlight ‘Merseyrail platform upgrades’ and West Kirby station when asked for a reference.”
