A 10k race takes place in Hoylake this Saturday in memory of Brett Jones, a well-known local boxer who lost his life to Pancreatic Cancer aged just 56.
On Saturday 11th June at 10.30am, hundreds of runners will leave Hoylake Community Centre to pound the promenade for a 6.2 mile scenic route that will raise much needed funds for the Pancreatic Research Fund and local sporting clubs. For the first time this year, a free kids’ junior mile will also take place at 9.30am.
The event is organised by Tri 4 Life in partnership with a number of local businesses and boxing clubs, who were all inspired to raise funds after losing their friend and local boxing hero in February 2014. Brett Jones was a Wirral-born boxer who excelled at county level and coached hundreds of children and young people throughout his life.
Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate – just 3% of those diagnosed survive for five years. It is also the only cancer that has seen no improvement in this figure over the last 40 years. The disease is notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat, because it is unusually aggressive, symptoms are often vague and appear at a late stage and surgery can be very difficult.
Liam Hanlon, Race Organiser explains: “Sadly, like many Brett discovered he had the disease just 7 weeks before he passed away. He was a great man and his passing had an impact on us all.
“We were inspired to organise the race in his memory after discovering the low levels of funding and donations that the fund receives and the vast amount of research that is required. The race is for runners for all abilities. It is professionally timed for the serious runners but beginners and those who are looking to walk the course (and even those in fancy dress) are also welcome.”
Entry is £15, with all proceeds going to the Pancreatic Research Fund, local sports, boxing and rugby clubs. Sign up will take place at Hoylake Community Centre on Hoyle Road from 8.30am until 10.15am. Participants for the kids’ junior mile are advised to simply turn up.
