“Cult” West Kirby t-shirt company nominated for prestigious national award.

A West-Kirby based clothing company has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Nicky Rockets, which is the brainchild of husband and wife team, Nicky and Perelandra Beedles, is in the running for Best Designer at the British Plus Size awards.

The company, which started off life at the couple’s kitchen table, has gained a cult following over the last three years for their cool, hand drawn designs and body positive, approach to prompting their work.

The couple also recently announced plans to become more environmentally-friendly by pledging to use climate neutral, fair wear tee-shirts and hand print all the designs using more gentle water based inks.

Nicky said: “We have always at the heart of our company been about equality, we are passionate about providing awesome clothes and accessories for every size and every budget.

“Taking the step to make sure our environmental footprint is as light as possible, and that our materials don’t exploit people is a natural progression and the response from customers has been amazing.”

Perelandra, a fashion writer and award winning style blogger, believes this is because in an increasingly frantic world, customers are starting to really appreciate authentic home grown design.

She said: “I think everyone is beginning to realise that fast fashion is just no longer sustainable.

“You can look cool without destroying the planet, we are proof that it can be done in an affordable straight forward way.

“Our tee-shirts start at £18. It’s no longer the providence of the middle class to own fair trade clothing. Independent designers are putting the big retail chains to shame”
