Five teenagers arrested following disturbance

Five teenagers were arrested on suspicion of public order offences following a disturbance in West Kirby last night.

Police were called to Dee Lane at around 7.30pm on Tuesday night after receiving reports of a theft from a shop.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We were called to Dee Lane in West Kirby at 7.30pm last night following reports of a theft from a shop.

“As a result officers had to deal with a disturbance and five males were arrested – two aged 17 and three aged 16 – for public order offences.”

A large police presence was in force around the scene following the incident, near to the West Kirby Concourse Leisure Centre, where a large group of young people had gathered.

The arrests come only days after a public meeting was held to discuss ongoing issues with anti social behaviour in West Kirby.

Wirral West MP Margaret Greenwood brought together representatives from Merseyside Police and Wirral Council’s anti social behaviour team for the event along with the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Cllr Emily Spurrell.

Earlier this month, police put in place an anti social behaviour dispersal zone and arrested two teenagers following reports of young people making threats with knives, drug misuse and throwing bottles and stones at cars.

Wirral Council’s Cabinet Member for Law and Order, Councillor Paul Stuart, said: “Wirral Council fully supports Merseyside Police and their response to a public disturbance in West Kirby.

“This type of menacing behaviour which police officers swiftly dealt with will not be tolerated anywhere in Wirral. Parents need to take responsibility for their children’s behaviour – and the Police should name and shame those who repeatedly cause trouble in our communities.

“I am also liaising with Margaret Greenwood MP as well as the Police and Crime Commissioner to see what more can be done to ensure we eliminate this type of criminal activity from the borough.”
