Replacement bus operators appointed following collapse of Avon

Stagecoach took over the 22 route from Avon Buses last year

Bus services to replace most of those run by Avon to and from West Kirby are to start on Monday 5 November.

Temporary services were introduced on some of the firm’s routes after the company’s collapse last month. Avon blamed its demise on rising costs and a discounted under 15’s travel ticket scheme.

Long-term operators have now been appointed by Merseytravel for most of the routes, following a formal tendering process.

However, it’s not all good news, as the 88/88A service – which ran from West Kirby to Heswall via Greasby – will not be replaced.

But the 38, from West Kirby to the Mill Park estate in Bromborough – now operated by Stagecoach – has been extended to Eastham Ferry.

The number 80 West Kirby to Newton circular returns, while the 82 West Kirby to Caldy circular has been extended to run to Greasby. Both services are operated by Stagecoach.

The 83A West Kirby to Birkenhead has been taken over by Arriva, with an additional journey from Birkenhead bus station at 7:30am.

A Merseytravel spokesperson said: “Timetables for each service are now online with printed copies due to be delivered out to information outlets from the week commencing 12th November onwards. The online journey planner is currently in the process of being updated to reflect the new services.

“Due to the quick turnaround in establishing these new services, some information at bus stops will not be updated in time for the start of the new services – we are aiming to have these all updated as soon as possible. We thank all bus users for their patience and understanding while this work is completed.”

More information about the services can be found here and on the websites of Stagecoach and Arriva.
