Pedestrian seriously injured in collision with car

King's Gap roundabout in Hoylake

Police say a person has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a collision with a car in Hoylake.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called to Market Street near the roundabout just before 2pm following reports a Vauxhall Astra was involved in a crash.

Eyewitnesses say the victim was trapped underneath the vehicle for a time.

There is confusion over whether the person who was struck is a man or woman, with eyewitnesses saying it is a man but police reporting it as a woman.

Merseyside Police said in a statement: “Emergency services are at the scene and the victim will be taken to hospital. Her condition is described as critical. The driver stopped at the scene to assist with enquiries.

“Road closures are currently in place and people are asked to avoid the area.”

One eyewitness, who didn’t want to be named, told West Kirby Today: “A group of lads including myself had to lift the car off him. Then everyone stepped in to help until the emergency services arrived. It was amazing to see everyone stepping up in that situation.”

Train services to and from West Kirby were temporarily terminating at Hoylake to allow the air ambulance crews unrestricted access to Market Street, but have now resumed.
