West Kirby and Hoylake battered by Storm Arwen

The occupants of a VW Golf are understood to have escaped with minor injuries after a tree fell on their vehicle in West Kirby as Storm Arwen battered our region.

The incident is believed to have happened on Column Road near Caldy roundabout late last night, when the tree collapsed on the car during high winds.

West Kirby Today has been told the people in the vehicle were pulled from the wreckage by an eye witness, who also called an ambulance.

A tree blocking Montgomery Hill

At least 80 trees across Wirral were damaged during the storm, according to local councillor Jeff Green.

Three trees are reported to be down in Church Road outside St Bridget’s, and Montgomery Hill was also blocked.

Council teams worked through the night and will continue today clearing roads and check damage.

Damage to a fence at West Kirby station

Train services on the West Kirby line have been disrupted by a tree on the line.

A rail replacement bus service has been in operation to and from Birkenhead North, although the line is expected to reopen this afternoon.

Mersey Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and to slow down on the roads until the winds drop this evening.

A wall and fence collapsed near Hoylake Tennis Club

Hoylake Christmas lights switch-on has been delayed by 24 hours due to the weather, and will now take place on Sunday 28 November at 6pm.
