Care home residents knit scarves for Ukrainian children

Orphaned children in Ukraine are to benefit from scarves made by residents at Red Rocks nursing home in Hoylake.

Encouraged by the home’s activities co-ordinator, Mozin Ali, they took up a dementia knitting challenge last November, picking up their needles for at least 30 minutes a day.

The scarves were presented to Olena Ten, a displaced Ukrainian dancer, at a special event at the home accompanied by a Ukrainian menu, created by the home’s chef, ahead of the second anniversary of the invasion.

Olena gave a history of Ukraine and danced a traditional dance for the residents, who gave her a vote of thanks.

The knitting challenge also raised money for Dementia UK, a specialist charity which helps families affected by the illness.
