Speeding drivers confronted by school pupils

Pupils from Black Horse Hill junior school in West Kirby have been grilling speeding drivers.

The school joined forces with Merseyside Road Safety Partnership and Merseyside Police to stop motorists who were exceeding the limit on Saughall Massie Road.

They were then put in front of a ‘kids court’ of the school’s ‘travel ambassadors’ to be educated about driving safely.

Merseyside Road Safety Partnership said: “Police worked to stop drivers travelling in excess of the speed limit, Wirral Council’s road safety team talked to drivers giving them the opportunity to engage in the initiative then drivers were put in front of the Kids Court.

“Needless to say the excuses weren’t enough and the kids had their say! Great work team! The initiative exists to educate drivers about Safe Speeds and Safe Behaviours on local roads.”

In a newsletter to parents, Black Horse Hill Junior School said: “Our Junior Travel Ambassadors worked closely with Merseyside Police and local councillors to carry out a speed awareness campaign on the roads around our school.

“On the day, the police measured the speed of the cars on the road. Any motorists travelling over the speed limit were invited into school to be interviewed by our Travel Ambassadors, who asked questions about safe driving around school, braking distances and the consequences of unsafe driving.

“Our ambassadors were very professional and confident when questioning the offenders and the feedback was that the experience was very humbling and has certainly made them think about being more careful drivers.”
