Hoylake and Meols set to lose councillor under new ward boundaries

Proposed changes to ward boundaries in Wirral will see Hoylake and Meols represented by two councillors instead of three.

It is due to changes which will end the anomaly of the centre of West Kirby being split between two wards.

Under the plan, drawn up by the independent Local Government Boundary Commission, it will become part of the West Kirby and Thurstaston ward rather than Hoylake and Meols.

It follows submissions from local residents and the Liberal Democrat and Green Party groups which described the current divide as “sub-optimal”.

The proposed boundary between Hoylake & Meols and West Kirby & Thurstaston wards follows the existing ward boundary until the Hoylake to West Kirby railway line, where it runs north before following the rear of properties on Airlie Road, The King’s Gap and Stanley Road.

The new ward map of Wirral

The Commission said: “We consider that a warding pattern that provides for a three-councillor West Kirby & Thurstaston ward and a two-councillor Hoylake & Meols ward…provides the best balance of our statutory criteria.”

It means Wirral as a whole will be represented by 65 councillors across 21 wards – one less than the current arrangements.

Publishing the recommendations Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We are very grateful to people in Wirral.

“We looked at all the views they gave us. They helped us improve our earlier proposals.

“We believe the new arrangements will deliver electoral fairness while maintaining local ties.”

The changes will become law once Parliament has approved them, and the new ward boundaries will come into effect at the next elections in May 2027.
