Gym at Concourse to get new equipment but creche to close

Wirral Council is to install new equipment in the gym at West Kirby Concourse.

A decision has been taken to take out a three year lease to replace existing equipment at West Kirby and Guinea Gap leisure centres.

It has also been revealed that the creche at the centre – which cares for children whilst parents and carers are exercising – is to close, with the area used to expand the gym.

The council said: “The age and condition of the equipment being well beyond its economic life is creating a significant health and safety risk, against which, the Council may not be able to provide a robust defence in the event of user injury.”

“This facility has the highest recorded gym usage, with 3,212 members in total, 2,409 active gym users, it is essential to maintain high-quality, reliable equipment to meet user expectations and continue strategic outcomes aligned to the council plan.

“Renewal of the existing equipment and the additional space generated from the pending creche closure will not only ensure continuity of service but also enhance user satisfaction and retention.”

It added that the costs of the equipment will be offset by an increase in annual income, whilst there will also be a saving of £80,000 per year in repair and maintenance costs.
