Work to bring playing fields back into use

Work is under way to bring playing fields in Hoylake back into use.

The pitches, on Sandringham Avene, fell into disrepair several years ago due to collapsed drains.

Their reintroduction formed part of a planning deal struck when Kingsmead School sold off a playing field for housing in 2019.

The money from the sale was meant to pay for a new sixth form block to secure the school’s future, but it was never built because Kingsmead closed down in 2020 due to financial issues.

Cllr Liz Grey, chair of Wirral Council’s Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said: “The works on the re-instatement of Sandringham Avenue Football Pitches started in early September with the site being cleared and tidied.

“Work has been delayed slightly due to the inclement weather but the next stage will be the installation of the drainage system.

“Following this the pitch will be seeded and upon establishment it will be used by local football teams. It will remain open access for the public to use.”

It was recently announced that discussions are now underway between the Kingsmead Trust and education charity Oasis about reopening the school.
