West Kirby promenade was closed to traffic today after Storm Jonas battered the Wirral coastline.
The promenade was partially flooded after the Met Office issued a weather warning for north west England, as the remnants of the US snow storm hit the UK.
Met Office Chief Operational Meteorologist, Will Lang said: “The rain will also be accompanied by south or southwesterly gales and possibly severe gales at times, especially over exposed coast and hills with large waves also expected.
“People should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel due to localised flooding.”
According to the Met Office, the wind was gusting up to 40mph along the Wirral coast. While the gales were causing some minor disruption in the region, they were also attracting a number of windsurfers.
The thrill seekers gathered at the car park next to Wirral Sailing Centre and were seen enjoying the extreme weather conditions off the beach towards Hilbre Island.
The storm disruption comes only days after it was revealed that a plan to protect West Kirby from flooding by introducing a new flood defence system on the promenade has been given the thumbs up by local residents.
Wirral Council is now in the process of applying for a grant from the Environment Agency to fund the scheme.
The exact design of the flood defence has not yet been decided. A report by Wirral Council found most local people would prefer some form of structure set back from the Victorian promenade.
