Women’s rugby has enjoyed something of a renaissance since England’s women won the Rugby World Cup in 2014.
As a result a local team is hoping to put women’s rugby firmly on the map in Wirral.
Hoylake Ladies RFC was launched just over three years ago and now has a 25-strong squad.
Such is the popularity of the sport that a new women’s league is due to launch in Wirral this April.
Steve Butterworth, team coach, said: “It’s really taking off, there are now 4 teams across Wirral and more coming on board.
“It is touch rugby, so there is no contact, and it is such a great sport for fitness and also for meeting new people.
“Many of the women on the team did not know each other before joining but now they love being part of a team and making new friends.”
The team trains every Wednesday at Hoylake RFC, in Carham Rd, from 7.15pm – 9pm and newcomers are always welcome.
They are also hosting an open day on May 7th at the club from 11am-1pm for anyone interested in finding out more about the sport.
