The West Kirby & Wasps Community Football Club is holding an open day this weekend, to encourage more girls to get involved in the sport.
The event, which is the Wasps’ contribution to the Football Association’s Girls’ Football Week, is being held at the club’s home ground in Anglesey Road, from 10am to 1pm on Sunday (May 1).
Girls aged between 5 and 14 are invited to take part in the event, and join more than 20,000 girls taking part in hundreds of events across the country.
The FA says football is the largest female team sport in England with more than 2.89 million players and more than 5,900 women’s and girls’ teams playing affiliated club football. Yet only half of girls surveyed by the FA felt that football was a game for them.
WASPS chairman Neil Shone told West Kirby Today: “This is a fantastic opportunity for new girls to come along, learn new skills and meet some of our regular members.
“It is open to all ages and we also encourage any parents who wish to get involved in coaching to also take part in the fun!
“It is going to be a great day with lots of fun activities running alongside the football and one that we hope will encourage more girls to participate in football.”
Donna McIvor, the FA national football participation manager, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer girls more opportunities to become involved in football than ever before.”
