Thieves have stolen the brass map from the viewing point at the top of Thurstaton Hill.

The plaque sat on a sandstone plinth at the highest point on the hill, and featured a map guiding sightseers to the panoramic views across the Dee to North Wales and the Mersey to Liverpool.

The map, which is familiar to thousands of Wirral residents and visitors to the beauty spot, was apparently stolen over the Bank Holiday weekend. It appears to have been roughly chiselled away from the plinth.

Nearby resident Graham Blair, who spotted the disappearance and alerted West Kirby Today, said: “I have seen thousands of parents showing their kids the various land marks on and surrounding the Wirral, using the plate as reference.

“Such a same so much pleasure has been lost to so many. I really hope those who have taken it see sense and return it to somewhere that will enable it to be restored.”

A Wirral council spokesperson told West Kirby Today: “The brass plaque at Thurstaston Hill viewing point was stolen over the Bank Holiday weekend. We have reported this to Merseyside Police.

“The police and ourselves take thefts from the public realm very seriously. Anyone who has any information that could lead to the return of the plaque should contact the police or ranger Paul Greenslade on 0151 677 7594 .”

A Merseyside Police spokesperson confirmed that a report of the theft had been received and was being investigated, and asked anyone with information to contact them by calling 101 or by calling the Crimestoppers line anonymously on 0800 555111.
