A seal pup is recovering at a wildlife hospital after it was rescued from the sea wall near West Kirby’s Marine Lake.
Walkers spotted the poorly animal stranded on the rocks near the side of the lake on Thursday and contacted the RSPCA.
Lewey Tait, who was involved in the rescue, said: “This poor little seal was stuck on a rock at the side of the walkway at marine lake.
“We rang the RSPCA and we waited for them to come and take him to get checked by a vet. They said they are hoping he will be released back to Hilbre Island.”
A spokesman for the RSPCA said the common seal pup was underweight and is being treated at the charity’s wildlife hospital, Stapeley Grange in Nantwich.
It is hoped he will recover and can be released back to the seal colony at Hilbre Island as soon as possible.
There is a well-established colony of Atlantic Grey Seals off the coast of Hilbre Island. Numbers of seals vary depending on the time of year but there can be as many as 300 during the summer months.
According to the Friends of Hilbre Island, the earliest positive identification of a Grey Seal in the Dee Estuary was in 1909 and by 1928 there were about 10. The highest ever count on record was 825 on the 24th June 2010.
