Around 100 people took part in a protest at plans to introduce new parking charges in parts of West Kirby.
It comes after officials at Wirral Council put forward proposals for meters on South Parade in West Kirby, as well as North Parade and Meols Parade in Hoylake.
The proposed charges are £1 per hour, £2 all day and £20 overnight.
However, local shopkeepers, business people and some residents argue that free and low cost parking is of enormous significance.
Two hour parking restrictions have recently been introduced on parts of Banks Road and residents fear that this could result in chaos when combined with parking charges on South Parade.
Ruth Trout, Chairperson of Church Road Action Group, who organised today’s march from Dee Lane to the Sailing Club, said: “We live on a road off South Parade which is severely impacted by the amount of cars that we already have on the road, and that’s not just from neighbours, it’s also people who come to visit the area.
“We have great problems parking, many a time we need to park on South Parade, this has also been impacted by the restrictions that are already in place on Banks Road, so many more people park on the side roads.
“We feel that if parking charges go ahead, it will impact on local businesses that already struggle at times, and we need the footfall from people.”
A spokesman for Wirral Council said: “We are consulting with residents on the proposals to introduce new parking charges.
“Residents have the opportunity to share their views as part of this process and all feedback will be taken into account before any decision is made.”
