There was relief at the final whistle as Caldy continued their unbeaten home run despite a spirited second half comeback by Amptill.
Caldy’s early pressure kept their visitors hemmed in the final third of the pitch, their persistence was rewarded in the eighth minute and after a great passing move the ball got to Mike Barlow who crossed by the post to give Caldy the lead.
Amptill quelled the Caldy pressure as best they could but it was only another eight minutes before Harrison Crowe ended another fantastic Caldy move involving a number of players.
Scoring for Ampthill was restricted to a single penalty on the half hour and despite having a try disallowed on the stroke of half time Caldy were pleased to go in with a healthy lead.
Caldy came out of the blocks again in the second half with Lewis Barker crashing over to score on 52 minutes and it looked as though Caldy would run away with the game.
Ampthill had other ideas as former Tongan International Lutui crossed just four minutes later to bring the visitors back into the game.
Caldy took their eye off the ball with five minutes to go when a clearance against the wind went in the favour of Amptill with Kpoku crossing to add the tension in the final few minutes.
The tension was unbearable for the home side who defended for their lives in the last 5 minutes rebelling a number of promising attacks from Amptill that could have seen them come away with the victory, one final clearance brought cheers both on and off the field .
Caldy now sit second in National One just a point behind leaders Old Elthamians and will be looking to continue their good form next week when they face another long trip to Granchester Road to face Cambridge who are currently in 12thbut only six points behind the ravers.
