Vegetarian-friendly coffee shop, Ground, in Hoylake is ditching plastic and working to cut its food waste.

Having officially made the switch in April last year, Ground coffee shop in Hoylake has recently increased their efforts to ditch plastic, recycle and cut food and water wastage by half.

Wirral activist group, SAS (Surfers Against Sewage) has named Ground as a Plastic Free Champion for its initiatives including providing free tap water in glass bottles, ditching plastic straws and using paper and other bio-degradable materials for all their takeaway boxes, coffee bags, stickers and labelling, packaging and cups.

Owner Mia Saunders said: “I knew when I started the business that being environmentally aware was a high priority and it has been a learning curve to bring the kitchen up to scratch with my expectations.

“It does mean a lot to us that we have been awarded for our efforts to go green and hopefully I’m inspiring others to do the same!”

The café owners, who opened Ground in February 2018 to offer an alternative vegetarian, gluten free and vegan menu,  sourced its furniture and kitchen equipment from local companies as well as growing their own fruit and vegetables to include on the menu.
