Wirral boasts some of the finest walking trails in the country.
Whether you want to take your dog out for a run along the beach, have a Sunday stroll around West Kirby Marine Lake or dodge the cyclists on the Wirral Way, there is something for everyone.
These are the West Kirby Today team’s 5 top walks but we’d love to hear from you about your favourite places to go hiking in and around the local area.
West Kirby to Caldy via Caldy Hill
This enjoyable walk takes in some breathtaking scenery with views across the whole of West Kirby and over the estuary to North Wales. The walk passes the Mariners’ Column (the structure just opposite Majestic Wine) and takes in the sandstone paths of Caldy Hill before passing through Caldy village then back into West Kirby along the Wirral Way.

West Kirby to Red Rocks
This easy walk is extremely popular with dog walkers. Start at the beach, nearest Morrisons supermarket, and walk along the sand until you reach the marshes and sand dunes, then follow one of the paths, which run alongside the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. You will be able to see what appears to be a lighthouse in the distance (it’s actually a folly built into a house). You will know when you’ve reached the red rocks as there are some rocks and they are red! There is also a slipway, which you can walk up and head into Hoylake or simply return the way you came.
West Kirby Marine Lake
No list would be complete without West Kirby’s most well-known walk. Start at either end of the lake and simply make your way around at your own pace. It gets extremely busy at weekends, particularly during the summer months. However, if you prefer the peace and quiet, then a stroll around the lake at sunset, or even sunrise for the early birds, is wonderful.
Hoylake & West Kirby War Memorial
This is only a short walk but has some absolutely spectacular views. It also benefits from a number of paths, including a pram and wheelchair-friendly route. Walk up Grange Road, past the White Lion pub on your left hand side. You will spot a public footpath sign a little further up the hill, near to a community noticeboard. The wheelchair and pram-friendly route is just around the corner off Grange Old Road and is also signposted.
The memorial was designed by British sculptor Charles Sargeant Jagger, who also designed the Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner in London.
West Kirby to Cubbins Green via the Wirral Way
Access the Wirral Way via Ashton Park and follow the signs towards Caldy and Thurstaston. You will pass under two bridges and eventually reach a small wooden bridge over some scrubland. Walk over this and then take the path on your right onto Cubbins Green, where you will find a way down onto the beach. You can either walk back the way you came or follow the path, through a wooden gate onto Macdona Drive, then follow Sandy Lane down to the Marine Lake.
