Six fire engines are tackling a blaze this evening on Thurstaston Common.

Mersey Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene, near Sandy Lane, at 4.46pm after plumes of black smoke were spotted behind Caldy Rugby Club.

In a statement on their website, they said: “Crews are fighting a fire in very hot conditions in an area difficult to reach involving grass, gorse and trees in an area approx 100 metres square.”

They believe the incident is likely to be ongoing for some time.

Earlier today, fire chiefs urged people to be particularly careful following similar grass blazes on Bidston Hill and in Formby, Ainsdale and St Helens.
