Swimmers using West Kirby Marine Lake for open water swimming are being asked to stop over safety fears.

Wirral Council says it’s not safe now water sports have been allowed to restart under the government’s roadmap for lifting restrictions.

In a statement, the local authority said: “Swimming isn’t actually allowed at the Marine Lake, and this is highlighted by signs on site.

“However, during the last year when lockdowns have limited access to other leisure activities and the Marine Lake wasn’t in use as usual, some swimmers made the most of the opportunity to enjoy the water while it was quiet.

“Unfortunately now sports such as windsurfing are happening again, it’s just not safe to swim at the same time.”

The council is looking into the possibility of holding dedicated swimming sessions so it can be done safely.

Licensed lake holders restarted water activities on the lake from 29 March, using their own equipment and in line with government guidance Wirral Sailing Centre plan to reintroduce their managed sessions.
