The Royal Liverpool Golf Club is closed until further notice after Travellers arrived in the car park and refused to move.

The group arrived on site yesterday evening at around 5.30pm.

The club alleges that members of staff have been threatened and intimidated and is advising members not to visit.

An email sent to members by club secretary Simon Newland, seen by West Kirby Today, said: “Since 5.30pm this evening the Club House car park has been occupied by Travellers and we have experienced some criminal damage and intimidation.

“The Police have attended site twice this evening, however the visitors remain stubbornly in situ.

”We have engaged the services of a private security company, which will maintain negotiations overnight and assist with negotiations thereafter.”

Members are advised not to enter the car park “under any circumstances”.

UPDATE: Merseyside Police say they understand the Travellers have now left the site.
