Engineers say an underground cable fault was to blame for a power cut which left parts of West Kirby and Hoylake in darkness for several hours last night.

The outage, which affected hundreds of homes in the CH47 and CH48 postcode areas, happened at around 5:30pm as households were preparing their evening meal.

Some businesses, including the West Kirby Tap, had to close their doors.

Power was eventually restored to properties in the towns at around 8.30pm.

The West Kirby Tap was among the premises affected

SP Energy Networks has messaged customers who reported a fault to apologise for the “unexpected and unplanned power cut”.

They added: “Our team isolated a fault on the underground cable network and your power should now be back on.

“We do not anticipate a further disruption to your supply.”
