Memorial benches on the promenade at Hoylake are being removed temporarily to be cleaned and refurbished, and to allow for park and ride service to The Open.

The Open Golf Championship returns to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club from July 16 to 23 and the event will attract large numbers of visitors to Hoylake.

As part of the traffic planning for the event park and ride, buses operating from the spectator car parks at Heron Road and Pump Lane will drop off and pick up spectators at North Parade.

The council says it is taking the opportunity to temporarily remove a number of benches from the stretch covering Kings Gap to Alderley Road, and use this time to clean and refurbish them where appropriate, before returning them after The Open.

Letters are going to the sponsors of each bench where contact details are available, and notices are also being placed on the benches informing people of their temporary removal.

Wirral Council’s Assistant Director, Neighbourhood Safety & Transport and the lead officer for the Open Golf, Mark Camborne, said: “We understand how important these benches are in remembering people’s loved ones and I want to assure everyone affected that this work will be done sensitively. It is being done in the best interests of ensuring the benches are not damaged when we have thousands of visitors coming to Hoylake for The Open.

“I want to emphasise that this is also a great opportunity to have the benches cleaned and fixed to help to ensure they can remain there for as long as possible in the future.”

The council says that if anyone has any questions or concerns about the benches they can contact the Open Golf Delivery Team on 0151 666 3050 or email the Team at open2023enquiries@wirral.gov.uk.

There is a Drop-In Office situated in the Hoylake Municipal Golf Club, Carr Lane, Hoylake, CH47 4BG to deal with any specific enquiries, open from 9am to 12 pm and 1pm to 4:30pm throughout July.
