COLUMN | Back pain? Yoga could help!

Yoga with Kate

West Kirby Today is delighted to introduce our new monthly columnist, local yoga teacher, Kate Knowles. She has been teaching yoga since 2004, and aims to offer classes that allow people to feel better after class than they did at the beginning.

Classes are held at a variety of locations across the Wirral including Calm yoga studio at Church Farm, Thurstaston, Hoylake Parade Community Centre, West Kirby Health and Wellbeing Centre and St Bridget’s Centre in West Kirby. Classes are also available on Zoom.

Most people have heard of yoga, but it can be shrouded in mystery, with images of people tucking their ankles behind their heads, balancing on their heads or practicing the splits. None of these things happen in my classes, which are ideal for beginners, or people returning to yoga after a break.

My classes are aimed at maintaining strength, flexibility and balance, so that we can continue doing the things we want to in life, whether that’s walking the dog, swimming, playing golf, walking, driving, going to concerts or enjoying time with friends and family.

Modern life can be incredibly challenging, and the pandemic only added to the stresses and anxiety of life, so all my classes include breathing and relaxation techniques that can be used in daily life to help us through tricky times. None of us are getting any younger! Establishing a gentle, regular yoga practice could help us during the aging process, and support us into a healthier old age.

I teach classes in Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs, Chair Yoga, Menopause Yoga, as well as regular yoga classes, luxury yoga spa days and three night retreats.

YOGA FOR HEALTHY LOWER BACKS – a twelve week course
“Thanks Kate. That’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my back”

Based upon research from Arthritis Research UK and York University, this course has been proven to support people with chronic back pain. I have been teaching YHLB since 2013, and has seen some amazing transformations as people learn gentle techniques to build strength, flexibility and manage pain.

Two years ago, Andy was booked in for spinal surgery, but cancelled it upon completing the course. This is what Andy had to say about YHLB:

“With Kate’s support, I now have the tools in place for a healthy lifestyle which in turn have alleviated the pain I was suffering, increased my mobility and greatly improved my overall mental and physical well-being. The skills gained from YHLB has ultimately improved my posture and allowed me to get back to a normal way of living including being able to walk my dogs, gardening and enjoying time with my family.”

I have two courses starting soon. The Monday evening course starts on 30 October at St Bridget’s Centre in West Kirby, and the Wednesday morning course is held at Hoylake Parade community centre, starting on 1 November.
