The former Sail Loft cafe in West Kirby is being marketed for rental following its closure.
Wirral Council took the decision to pull the plug on the eatery last September after forecasts showed that, when combined with the £155k net subsidy it received in 2022/23, it could be on course to rack up losses totalling £320,000 by April this year.
The cafe, above Wirral Watersports Centre, opened in July 2021 – but its trade was instantly hit by the work on the flood defence scheme, which restricted parking and access, as well as the rising cost of energy and supplies.
The property is being marketed by Lambert Smith Hampton, and the brochure states: “The Sail Loft comprises a first floor Cafe/Restaurant opportunity. The property measures a total of 2,863 sq. ft. and benefits from views over Hilbre Island and The Irish Sea. Within close proximity to the property is ample public parking. South Parade is a popular walking destination within West Kirby. The unit is DDA compliant and benefits from both changing rooms and male, female and disabled W/C’s.”
Councillors who rubber stamped its closure requested that priority should be given to local businesses interested in taking it over.
The rental price is only available to applicants, but the council has previously said that based on figures from 2019, it could generate an annual income of £30,000.
