Labour’s Matthew Patrick has been elected as Wirral West’s new MP.

He had a majority of 9,998 over his nearest rival, Conservative councillor Jenny Johnson.

A former Wirral councillor for Upton, he was brought up in Birkenhead and has worked in financial services and energy regulation since stepping down in 2018.

During his campaign, he said his priorities would be tackling the cost of living crisis, the NHS, protecting the environment and making sure local children get the best start in life.

He says politics can change lives as it “protects that which needs protecting, supports those that need supporting, and fights for everyone – without fear or favour”.

The electoral map had been redrawn since 2019, with the constituency also taking in parts of the now abolished Wirral South constituency including some of Heswall, Thornton Hough and Woodchurch.

The seat was previously held by Margaret Greenwood, who stepped down at the end of the last parliament.

The number of votes for each candidate was as follows:

Matthew Patrick, Labour: 23,156

Jenny Johnson, Conservative: 13,158

Ken Ferguson, Reform: 6,422

Gail Jenkinson, Green: 4,160

Peter Reisdorf, Lib Dem: 3,055
