Anyone who visits the White Lion in West Kirby will know they serve up delicious food from the folk who run Bamboo Thai in Moreton. So when we were offered the chance to sample the food at the mothership on Hoylake Road as guests of the owners, we didn’t hesitate…
We tend to stay local when we go out to eat, and to our shame, we have never really thought of a visit to Moreton before – even though it’s less than five miles away as the crow flies, and easily reached by car or train.
The restaurant is owned by Wirral couple, Dave Otter and Pam Anuniwat, who opened it in 2021, serving up street food from an extensive menu.
Inside, tables are well spaced out but it retains a cosiness – with a small bar and open kitchen at the rear so you can see the chefs working their magic.
For the starter, my wife chose the vegetable spring rolls with a sweet chilli dip. I managed to sample a small portion of before it completely vanished from the plate – definitely a good sign!
I went for the chicken shumai, hand-made dim sum dumplings (pictured above) which literally melted in my mouth.
As I am not especially a fan of Thai green/red/yellow curry, I decided upon a massamam with slow cooked beef for main. I can recommend this if you usually enjoy an Indian as it is a fusion dish. The sticky white rice that I ordered as a side helped soak up the sauce and I enjoyed every mouthful.
My dining companion opted for the Pad Thai with chicken (pictured above), a noodle stir fry which definitely got the thumbs up.
Already well fed (and watered, courtesy of red wine and prosecco), we decided to share the only non-Thai dessert on the menu – the chocolate brownie. I can report that our ritual spoon fight to try and make sure we end up with fairly equal portions ended – as usual – in defeat for me!
