A new operator has taken over Wirral’s municipal tennis courts, following investment in sites including West Kirby and Meols.
A successful funding bid by the council has led to £362,000 being invested into tennis courts across the borough, with some facilities being completely revamped.
The courts at Ashton Park have been washed and repainted, while Meols Parade Gardens has received new fencing. All sites have a new gate access system.
Council leader, Cllr Paul Stuart, said: “This significant investment is in line with our plan to give more people access to high quality sports and recreation facilities within the borough.
“Providing our communities with state-of-the-art tennis courts is a vital part of encouraging local people to live active and healthy lives – and will hopefully help to produce some homegrown Grand Slam winners in the future.
The work coincides with the appointment of ‘We Do Tennis’ C.I.C to take over as operators of the courts.
Andy Moss, Head of Parks at We Do Tennis said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be taking over the running of Wirral’s tennis courts, especially after the refurbishments.”
A mix of free and low-cost tennis is available, including the LTA’s Barclays Free Park Tennis sessions – free, social tennis sessions which provide regular opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and play.
Alternatively, the courts cost £4 per hour to hire, or £35 for a household annual season ticket, with the council saying the income will pay for the maintenance of the sites.
Last year, around 400 people played regularly at Meols Parade Gardens, and 300 at Ashton Park.
A new booking system means it is now easier to get on court by booking in advance to guarantee availability. All courts will be available to book via the Lawn Tennis Association LTA website.
