Wirral Council has put in place flood defence barriers on South Parade in West Kirby ahead of the arrival of Storm Darragh.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning, with winds of between 60 and 70 miles per hour forecast on Saturday, and strong gusts also expected until mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Demountable barriers and some swing gates have been closed on the flood wall ahead of the weekend.

Wirral Watersports Centre will have no water-based activities on the lake on Saturday, and an inspection will be carried out before they resume.

All outdoor programmed exercise classes have been cancelled, and people are being advised to stay away from woodlands and wooded areas.

The Council are asking that fallen trees on the road should be reported to StreetScene on 0151 606 2004 (9am-5pm, Mon-Fri) or 0151 647 7810 (out of hours).

The RNLI are warning people to take care if they are near the coast, and exercise extreme caution.

Chris Cousens, Regional Water Safety Lead said: “We know the predicted weather this week could lead to dangerous and uncertain conditions.

“If you plan on visiting the coast, the RNLI advises that you stay a safe distance from the water as conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea. It is not worth risking your life.

“If you find yourself in trouble unexpectedly in the water, remember to Float to Live; lie back in the water, extend your arms and legs and try to relax as best as you can until you get control of your breathing.

“If you see someone else in danger in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. If you have something that floats that they can hold on to, throw it to them. Don’t go in the water yourself – you may end up in difficulty too.”
