Two people were rescued this afternoon after getting stranded on the way back from Hilbre Island.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team and West Kirby RNLI were scrambled after the pair and their pedal bikes became stranded by the rising tide.

There was a delay in rescuing them as they requested help from the fire service rather than the coastguard.

The Coastguard said: “Instead of calling the Coastguard, they Googled what to do and contacted the fire service.

“Remember: If you’re in trouble at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

“Thankfully, West Kirby Lifeboat safely rescued them and brought them back to shore.

“A reminder to all coastal visitors: Always check tide times before heading out and allow plenty of time to return before the tide cuts you off!”
