Volunteers have been busy ensuring West Kirby, Hoylake and Meols mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Hoylake and Meols Christmas Lights have spent time putting up bunting and flags, and placing figures depicting soldiers around the area, whilst West Kirby in Bloom have also put up bunting.

There are also a series of events to mark the occasion:

Wednesday 7 May at 2:30pm: Friends of West Kirby Library hosting a singalong, tea, coffee and cakes (tickets £4)

Thursday 8 May at 6pm: VE Day service at St Hildeburgh’s Church in Hoylake

Friday 9 May at 7pm: VE Day celebration at Melrose Hall – bring your own alcohol (tickets £10 from Jackie on 0151 632 2152)

Saturday 10 May at 2pm: Afternoon cream tea party at St Hildeburgh’s Church in Hoylake with donations going to ‘Help for Heroes’

On Thursday 8 May at 6.30pm, bells will ring out at local churches as part of a national shared moment of celebration.

The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Cherry Povall JP, said: “After six hard years of fighting, which brought unbearable heartbreak for many, most of the country was able to give a huge sigh of relief on VE Day and to take a moment to celebrate their victory over Nazi tyranny.

“Across Wirral, church bells rang, bonfires were lit, and neighbours joined together to throw hundreds of street parties – It must have been the party to end all parties.

“Although 80 years have passed, the scale and significance of what they achieved will be remembered forever. I look forward to reflecting on the incredible efforts and sacrifices made by our grandparents and great grandparents, who helped secure peace and our freedom. They are rightly considered to be Britain’s greatest generation.”
