Wirral Council is consulting over changes to the library service which would see six close, although West Kirby would be retained.
Under the plans, which the council says will “provide comprehensive, modern, accessible and sustainable facilities that will meet the needs of Wirral communities”, West Kirby along with Bebington, Birkenhead, Eastham, Heswall, Moreton, Wallasey and Upton libraries will remain open.
However, Beechwood, Greasby, Leasowe, Rock Ferry, Seacombe and St James would all close, with the council investing in improving online library services.
Wirral Council said: “The proposals are based around a core eight-site model of council operated library buildings designed to ensure the council meets its statutory duties in providing a ‘comprehensive and efficient’ library service, while still rationalising the service in line with this year’s budget resolution.
“Importantly it recognises the broadening role of libraries in today’s society and sets out plans to transform the digital offer that is at the heart of a modern, future-focused service.”
It added: “The consultation process is designed to set out options for a future Library model in Wirral that is focusing on an optimized, accessible, and sustainable service that maximises the use of digital technologies, community outreach and ownership opportunities.”
The council is now asking the public for their views and a series of drop-in events are taking place this week for residents to have their say:
- Monday 12 May– Birkenhead Central (lobby) 9.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm
- Tuesday 13 May – Bebington Central (reference section) 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 7pm
- Thursday 15 May – Wallasey Central (counter area) 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 7pm
- Friday 16 May – West Kirby (near entrance) 9.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm
