A woman was rescued after falling into a deep crevice on Hilbre Island.
Wirral Coastguard say the casualty had been walking near the old lifeboat station on Tuesday afternoon when she slipped on algae-covered rocks and fell into a narrow crevice, becoming stuck.
She dropped her phone during the fall and was unable to call for assistance herself – but fortunately another walker nearby heard her shouts for help and raised the alarm.
Wirral Coastguard said: “Our team deployed our off-road vehicle to access Hilbre and assess the situation. Before our arrival, two members of the public had acted swiftly, using a rescue life ring and rope to help free the casualty from the crevice.
“Coastguard Officers carried out a medical assessment on scene. Thankfully, injuries were limited to cuts, bruises, and a suspected sprained ankle.
“The casualty was then transported safely back to shore using our 4×4 vehicle. Coastguard Officers also recovered the female’s mobile phone from the edge of the slippery rocks, using a bankside safety system with a secured safety rope to ensure the recovery was carried out safely.
“A huge thank you to the two individuals who heard the calls for help and stepped in to assist.”
They added: “For anyone visiting Hilbre Island, please take extra care around the slippery rocks, particularly at the rear of the old lifeboat station where algae can make surfaces extremely hazardous. In an emergency on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
