Registration nights are being held at The Railway pub in Meols for people wanting to take part in this year’s Wirral Kayak Challenge.
The annual paddle boarding event – now in its 11th year – takes place on Sunday 11 June, with people rowing 14 miles from New Brighton to Thurstaston to raise money for charity.
It starts from Harrison Drive beach at 6am – just after high water, with participants heading over behind Hilbre Island for low tide, and then on to the finish at Dee Sailing Club for around 3pm where there will be entertainment.
The event has raised a total of £65,000 in previous years, and the good causes to benefit in 2023 will be Claire House Children’s Hospice, Holistic Cancer Centre and Stick ‘n’ Step.
Registration nights take place on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm – 9.30pm, starting on 13 April and running until 1 June. More information on how to get involved can also be found at https://www.facebook.com/wirralkayakchallenge.
Organiser Mike Dudley told West Kirby Today: “The event is growing year on year, to date we have raised over £63,000 for local Wirral charities, including £8,000 last year.
“We have 28 businesses helping with this year’s event, with Yamaha Marine UK being our biggest supporter. MES Marine and MES Racing are covering the event with safety boats and jet skis.
“Hinton’s Butchers will be supplying burgers and sausages for our barbecue.”
Last September, the organisers staged the first annual kayak event on West Kirby Marine Lake for children aged from seven to 17, and local Sea Scout groups.
