Emergency services were scrambled after two women and their three dogs became trapped in deep mud at Thurstaston beach.
The Coastguard, RNLI crews from West Kirby and Hoylake, fire service and ambulances were called to the beach on Tuesday afternoon as the tide began rising around them.
A lifeboat and hovercraft located the pair in the water, by which time they had managed to free themselves from the mud, but still needed assistance to make it ashore.
Once safely ashore, they were handed over to the emergency services, but no further medical treatment was needed.
Emergency services at the scene
Michael Buratti, Coastguard Area Commander, said: “Mud can trap you very quickly and easily, leaving you unable to move and it’s particularly dangerous when the tide is coming in.
“Today, the two women did the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard. We sent the specialist mud rescue teams and worked with other agencies to ensure all involved got to safety.”
“Sinking mud is not always easily noticeable so we would advise following the information on local signs as that will have bespoke safety information relevant to the area.”
