The Royal Liverpool Golf Course in Hoylake is among seven across Merseyside to be named among the best in Great Britain and Ireland for 2025.
Compiled by a panel of golf experts, journalists and course raters, the list assessed golf courses based on course design, setting, conditioning and facilities, to determine the rankings.
They also considered each venue’s heritage and history in hosting major tournaments to find out which came out on top.
The Royal Liverpool ranked 29th on the national list, described as a “highly strategic” course that’s “incredibly strong and well-balanced” by National Club Golfer. It impressed the experts with its classic design and challenging holes.
The course hosted the first Amateur Championship in 1885, and over time, has seen some of the most elite golfers rise to become champions on its greens – from Tiger Woods’ claiming one of his most emotional victories in the 2006 Open Championship, to Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman winning the competition in 2014 and 2023 respectively.
The other local courses on the list are: Royal Birkdale, Formby, Hillside, West Lancashire, Southport & Ainsdale, and Wallasey.
