Around 20 people had to be rescued from the walkway around the Marine Lake in West Kirby after it flooded.
The incident happened yesterday afternoon during a high tide which completely submerged the path.
Wirral Coastguard said: “Upon arriving at West Kirby Marine Lake, we found approximately 20 people — some with dogs — walking around the marine lake pathway.
“Three Coastguard Rescue Officers carried out an immediate water rescue operation, assisting around 20 people safely back to shore and carrying several dogs back to dry land.”
They added: “When the tide fully covers the pathway, it becomes extremely dangerous. It’s easy to lose your bearings and accidentally step into the lake or sea, or be knocked off your feet by an unexpected wave. Please be aware that the marine lake pathway can become fully submerged during large tides.”
West Kirby RNLI have revealed that they were involved in a similar situation on Friday.
They said: “This comes almost 24 hours after a shout of a similar nature where we (being already out on exercise) could see that waves were breaking onto the walkway making two elderly people unsteady on their feet and nearly causing them to fall over. They were brought onto the boat and taken to dry ground, thankfully needing no medical attention.
“If you ever think anybody’s in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. During particularly high tides, the lake walkway can get completely covered by water and be impossible and dangerous to walk around, so please take extra care.”
