Road restrictions to protect a weak railway bridge just outside West Kirby station are set to begin on Monday.
Signs are now in place alerting motorists that Bridge Road is to be closed to all traffic on Monday and Tuesday, after which it will become a one-way street for up to 18 months.
A weight restriction order has also been issued meaning that no vehicles weighing more than 26 tonnes will be able to use the route.
As we revealed last month, structural weaknesses were discovered in the bridge when Network Rail engineers were carrying out a recent inspection.
Bridge Road will remain a two way route from its junction with Grange Road to the Aldi car park. But traffic will be one-way from Orrysdale Road across the bridge towards Grange Road.
Network Rail owns the structure, and talks are continuing between its officials and Wirral council on what work needs to be done in order to permanently strengthen it.
Until a decision is made on what work needs to be done, it is not clear if the work will have any impact on passengers using the regular Merseyrail services in and out of West Kirby station.
Thousands of commuters and other passengers use the route every day to travel to Birkenhead and Liverpool on the West Kirby line.
A Network Rail spokesperson said it was too early to say to what extent services might be affected. “We will work in the way that causes the minimum possible disruption to passengers.”
