West Kirby Sailing Club has cancelled its fireworks display on public safety grounds – saying it would be “irresponsible” to hold it during the ongoing flood wall construction work.

Wirral Council announced a month ago that completion of the scheme had been delayed until early 2023.

It is the third consecutive year that the event has not taken place. Last year’s was called off because Natural England required an assessment of the risk to local wildlife, and in 2020 it was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement, West Kirby Sailing Club said: “With regret, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel our fireworks display this year.

“Due to the current state of South Parade and the on-going flood defence works, we believe, in the interests of public safety, it would be irresponsible of us to go ahead due to the lack of crowd space, parking and emergency service access to the Promenade. This is a view shared by the emergency services.

“We appreciate residents and visitors will be disappointed but we must put safety first.”

The club is urging people to attend a display at Hoylake Sailing Club on Friday 4 November at 6pm.
