Plans have been submitted to build 39 houses on land in West Kirby earmarked to become protected green space.

The trustees of Greenfield Estate on Grange Road commissioned a consultation with local residents earlier this year over a proposal for 46 homes.

They received a total of 152 responses, with only one being in support of the scheme. Concerns were raised about a range of issues including the loss of open space, traffic congestion and the impact on the wider area.

The planning consultants say that in response to the feedback they have made a number of changes, including reducing the number of units and creating areas of open space within the development.

The homes proposed range from apartments to villas, with two existing properties on the land refurbished.

An area of open space would be retained on Grange Road, together with the existing stone boundary walls, woodland and mature trees.

In a statement supplied as part of an outline application, Emery Planning said: “The proposed development now subject to this planning application has changed significantly since the public consultation exercise carried out with the development team incorporating a number of changes to try and address comments raised.

“The final proposed scheme has been the product of years of refinement by the development team.”

The site as it looks now

Under its new Local Plan, Wirral Council has proposed that the site should be designated as protected green space, meaning it could not be built on.

However, the plan has only just been submitted to the government and still needs to be considered by an independent planning inspector before it can be adopted. It means the application will have to be considered under the council’s existing planning framework.

A public consultation on the application ends on Wednesday 16 November, and can be viewed at https://online.wirral.gov.uk/planning/index.html?fa=getApplication&id=226857
