Waste and recycling collections look set to be disrupted over the Christmas and new year period.

Wirral Council says it has been informed of further industrial action by Biffa staff, in an ongoing dispute over pay.

They will walk out from Wednesday 28 December – Friday 30 December, Tuesday 3 January – Friday 6 January and Monday 16 January – Saturday 21 January.

Residents whose regular collection day falls on Boxing Day (Monday) were due to have an earlier collection on Christmas Eve (Saturday), but this will now not happen because Biffa staff will not be working.

In addition, people whose brown bin collection was missed during the week of industrial action earlier this month will now not receive an extra collection in the first week of January.

In a statement, Wirral Council said: “We understand negotiations are continuing between union representatives and Biffa management.

“Council officers are also in regular dialogue with Biffa management in an effort to speed up a possible resolution to this industrial action.”

People wanting to take their festive rubbish to the tip will be unable to do so, as there is also due to be strike action by Veolia staff working at Merseyside’s household waste recycling centres, including West Kirby.

They will be closed from Wednesday 28 December – Saturday 7 January and from Sunday 15 January – Saturday 21 January.

In a statement on their website, Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority said:”Wherever you can, please store your waste and recycling until the Recycling Centres are open.

“We appreciate that this is inconvenient but would like to thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.”
