Volunteers from the RNLI in Hoylake and West Kirby have been running special sessions teaching children vital water safety messages.

The partnership with the Helen Diamond Swimming School was established following drownings in 2020 after the easing of pandemic lockdown restrictions.

Half an hour of each lesson is dedicated to teaching ‘float to live’ water safety skills, delivered by RNLI volunteers.

There were 22 fatalities in the north west as a result of accidental drowning in 2022 across inland and coastal locations.

The sessions, which coincide with Drowning Prevention Week, have been taking place at Calday Grange Swimming Pool and Birkenhead High School Academy.

Dave Bates, Hoylake RNLI Water Safety Adviser said: “We are really looking forward to partnering with the Helen Diamond Swimming School again this year.

“These children are already learning to swim, but there is much more to being safe in and around water.

“The RNLI messages and these skills can save your life whether you are a non-swimmer or a county champion, especially if you have fallen into cold water.”
