A training exercise saw Wirral Coastguard practising a complex rescue scenario in Caldy.

The exercise at Cubbins Green on Wednesday evening was designed to test their ability to treat a seriously injured casualty and extract them from a difficult location using the steep slopes and rocks.

In a post on social media, they explained: “The team practiced locating and treating a non responsive casualty with multiple injuries before transferring them to a stretcher for extraction.

“The casualty in this scenario had a major head injury and an open fracture to the left arm. As the first aid team were doing their work, the rest of the team set up a rope handrail system to provide the safest possible method of casualty recovery up the steep and slippery mud and grass slope using the ‘caterpillar technique’.

“We were also able to test out Officer in Charge (OIC) and team leading roles in providing on scene management and multi agency working and reporting.

“Following a successful recovery and simulated handover to paramedics we retreated to our Station in Meols for a full debrief of the exercise, discussing both good points and what could be done better.

“It was a realistic, difficult and tiring evening but we train like this to ensure that when we have a real incident of this sort we can get the casualty to hospital care as quickly, safely and as professionally as possible.”
